About Davey Vos

Davey Vos is a boutique firm specialising in all aspects of taxation including VAT, and the full cycle of tax dispute resolution from Objection, Appeal, Alternate Dispute Resolution to Tax Board and Tax Court representation.

LEGAL PRIVILEGE

Our in- house lawyers, comprising part of our team, includes two admitted advocates and one admitted attorney who reflect on the respective Advocates’ and Attorneys’ Rolls, thereby ensuring client privilege and confidentiality, on tax law advice.

In the case of Mohamed v President of the Republic of South Africa and Others 2001 (2) SA 1145 (CC) it was held that legal professional privilege extends to salaried legal advisers in the employ of the government. Furthermore and in terms of Van der Heever v die Meester en Andere 1997 (3) SA 93 (T) legal professional privilege was further extended to salaried legal advisers in the employ of a private body such as a firm giving tax advice.

Executive Director & General Counsel

Tony has 35 years consulting and litigation experience in the Tax and Financial Regulatory fields.  He obtained his BA and LLB degrees at the University of Natal.  He subsequently completed an Honours degree in taxation at Wits, a Masters degree in Commercial Law at UNISA and a post graduate diploma in international tax (cum laude) at the University of Johannesburg.

Tony is an admitted Advocate of the High Court of South Africa (1982), a Chartered Secretary (FCIS), and a registered and qualified Chartered Tax Adviser (SAIT).

Tony is a co-author of Broomberg on Tax Strategy (Lexis Nexis).  He is also the columnist for Costa Divaris’ (ex Silke on Income Tax) monthly tax newsletter as well as the South African contributing author to two international publications Planning and Administration of Offshore and Onshore Trusts (Bloomsbury Publishing Plc) and Tolley’s International Succession Laws (STEP).  He appears as a guest tax adviser on Summit T.V.

Prior to establishing the firm, Tony acted as General Counsel to three JSE-listed financial services companies.

As a member (honorary Status Conferred in 2014) of the National Bar Council of SA (previously IAASA), Tony negotiates Alternate Dispute Resolution and litigates before the Tax Board and Court.

Tony is appointed by the Minister of Finance as a Chairperson to the Tax Board for the hearing of Income Tax Appeals.

Werner Vos

Werner Vos

Executive Director

Werner Vos has over 25 years consulting experience in the Tax services area.  He obtained his B Comm degree at Potchefstroom University and his Honours at UNISA.  He subsequently obtained an LLB degree at UNISA and completed an advanced certificate in Taxation at UNISA.

Werner is a Tax Practitioner registered with the South African Institute of Tax Practitioners.

He worked in a Senior Capacity at SARS whereafter he started his own tax compliance and advisory business.  He appears as a guest tax adviser on Summit T.V.

James Durand, our non- executive director, is a Chartered Accountant with 10 years’ experience in auditing and corporate finance.

Adv. Lara Durand

in-house Legal Counsel

Lara Davey obtained her LLB Degree from the University of Stellenbosch in 2011 and subsequently completed her practical legal training (PLT) at Eversheds Legal Firm. She was admitted as an Advocate in the South Gauteng High Court on 25 July 2013. Lara currently specialises in Financial Regulatory services and is an approved external compliance officer with the Financial Services Conduct Authority.

Michelle Swanepoel (neé Labuschagne)

Consultant

Michelle hails from a SARS lineage in that her father was the deputy Receiver, Johannesburg and has ten years’ experience at SARS and a further fifteen years in private tax practice. Michelle specialises in income tax compliance and e-filing processes.

Adv. Mark Hawyes

Consultant

​Mark joined our team in 2018 as a consultant. He has a B Juris, LLB and was admitted as an Advocate in January 1995. Mark has been an acting Judge of the High Court and Labour Court and is experienced in civil and commercial dispute resolution matters. Mark has completed the requirements for a Master of Laws in Taxation, and also holds a Professional Certificate in Tax Dispute Resolution. Mark is a SARS registered Tax Practitioner.

Duncan McAllister

Consultant

Duncan assists us on complex tax opinions and special projects. Duncan is a CA(SA) and retired from SARS, where he was a senior specialist on corporate tax and CGT. Duncan is the author of the acclaimed SARS Comprehensive Guide to Capital Gains Tax, now in its 9th edition.
